The news of the death of a Nigerian Air Force woman, Lance Corporal Bercy Ogah, after being bitten by a snake attracted several reactions from concerned Nigerians.

According to reports, Ogah was bitten by the snake while at the restroom in the restroom of her flat on Bill Clinton Drive at the NAF Base in Abuja. Since the death of Ogah, other Nigerians have taken to social media to narrate their ordeals with snakes, especially in their toilets.

It, therefore, becomes important to be cautious of these snakes around the home.

Here are 10 ways to make sure snakes stay away from your house in general and toilet in particular.

1. Blend Onions And Garlic

That onion and garlic sitting in your kitchen cabinet can be used to repel snakes from your toilet, backyard, and any parts of your house. Whether you use one or the other, or both combined, be rest assured the result will leave you thankful. Not only is it cheap, this repellant can be made easily at home.

How?

  1. Blend five or more onions and/or garlic.
  2. Add some rock salt
  3. Put in a container and sprinkle around those areas the snakes are suspected to lurk

2. Keep rodents away

Keep your home free of mice and rats with the right rodent protection. If you have mice or rats in your house, get rid of them as soon as possible. Snakes follow the food trail. Their food chain consists of mice, frogs, small birds, and insects. If there’s no food, there won’t be snakes.

3. Clear your bushes

It is always a good idea to make sure that all bushes surrounding your home are properly burned and removed so that no rodents or reptiles will be attracted to your home.

4. Fumigate

Ensure that your toilet sink is regularly fumigated as well. This can be done with special pesticides.

5. Keep windows and doors shut

If you have a bathroom with windows and sliding doors, close them or make sure the screens are intact so that snakes can’t enter.

6. Use More Tiles In Your House

The slippery surface of tiles makes it difficult for snakes to move around, thus, making it easier for them to be caught. Tiles’ slippery surfaces may also make them ineffective at catching their prey. You can be rest assured that they won’t come back to your house once they feel discomfort.

7. Seal All Cracks

They will be unable to enter your house if you take this step. It’s possible that you don’t even know there are cracks and crevices, but even the smallest crack can allow access to your home. Caulking and other methods can be used to seal it.

8. Clean Your Drainage

Considering snakes can travel through drains if your drains are not cleaned and are filled with stagnate drain water, then they may reach your home. Thus, clean and cover drainage.

9.Cover your toilet lid properly

Make sure your toilet lids are well covered. You can also put a brick on it if you leave in snake prone areas. It’s a good idea to also shut off your bathroom filter when you’re not in the bathroom in order to prevent the reptile from moving further through the pipes.

10. As a final note, always check inside your toilet sink before you sit on it, never use the toilet in the dark, get a touch, and reduce the use of public toilets.
