The family of the popular Nigerian Musician, Olanrewaju Fasasi, Sound Sultan has announced the death of Sound Sultan.
According to the statement released by the family, Sound Sultan died of a cancer known as Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL).
AITL is a rare disease that affects the white blood cells.
The cancer, according to the National Organisation for Rare Disorders, is a “form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which is a group of related malignancies (cancers) that affect the lymphatic system (lymphomas).
“The lymphatic system functions as part of the immune system and helps to protect the body against infection and disease. It consists of a network of tubular channels (lymph vessels) that drain a thin watery fluid known as lymph from different areas of the body into the bloodstream.”
The body’s immune system attacks the cells and tissues like the red blood cells and platelets.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Some of the symptoms of AITL include:
- High fever
- Night sweats
- Skin rash
- Autoimmune disorders
Diagnosis
Diagnosing the ailment is possible by taking a biopsy.
According to the Lymphoma Research Foundation, “The majority of patients with AITL are diagnosed with advanced-stage disease, either Stage III or Stage IV. In Stage III, affected lymph nodes are found both above and below the diaphragm. In Stage IV, one or more organs beyond the lymph nodes are affected, such as the bone, bone marrow, skin or liver.”
Sound Sultan is one of the pioneers of hip hop in Nigeria. He died at age 44.
