MTN announced that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted it the approval to conduct the National Identification Number (NIN) registration on behalf of the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC).
This development was conveyed on a conference call held by the MTN Group to discuss the SIM cards registration audit in Nigeria.
According to MTN, the approval is aimed at easing the “tedious and often time-consuming process associated with getting NINs from the government agency.”
The approval would also facilitate the integration of MTN subscribers’ SIM registration record with the NIN.
In order to achieve this, the telecommunications industry has acquired about 14,000 registration devices which will be delivered in the next two weeks.
The 14,000 devices have the capacity to carry-out about 448,000 registrations per day and about 5.4 million registrations per annum.
According to the industry, the device can capture 10 fingerprints at once which is one of the essential requirements of the NCC.
This development is a step taken by MTN to implement the new policy by the Federal Government to integrate all Nigerians’ biometric database.
