Electoral Act Amendment Bill has been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, February 25, 2022.

The signing of the bill was witnessed by Ahmed Lawan, President of the Senate, and Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives at the Council Chamber of the Aso Villa in Abuja.

There were also members of the President’s cabinet in attendance, including his Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.

The bill had generated several attacks and counter-attacks among Nigerians with a huge controversy surrounding its approval.

Recall that The News Beam had reported that the National Assembly, had earlier passed the bill, emphasizing that political parties use only a direct mode of primary elections but President Buhari rejected this when it was submitted for assent.

It should also be recalled that The News Beam reported that the Senators reintroduced and passed the bill after including the indirect mode of conducting primaries – a major reason for the President’s rejection.
