President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed his intention to open Nigeria’s Borders as soon as possible.
Disclosing this on his official Twitter account after his meeting with the State Governors earlier today, he said, “I explained that the closure of Nigeria’s land borders was partly an attempt to control the smuggling in of weapons & drugs.”
He explained that since the reason for the closure of the borders have been accomplished, the borders would be reopened soon.
“Now that the message has sunk in with our neighbours, we’re looking into reopening the borders as soon as possible”. Buhari said.
Recall that in August, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the closure of Nigeria’s land border with Benin, preventing the importation of goods.
Buhari also ordered closure of all of Nigeria’s borders in order to control the smuggling in of weapons & drugs.
Imports into Nigeria were to come through sea ports, where customs duties can be imposed more easily than at land borders.
The closure of the borders and import restrictions have had an adverse effect on trade in foodstuffs already affected by various past import restrictions.
However, Nigeria’s vital oil exports were not affected.
