The Sokoto State High Court has sentenced Umaru Isma’il to a jail- term of five years without an option of fine, yesterday, 12th of October 2020.
Umaru was prosecuted on an eight-count amended charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence. He was charged to court by the Sokoto Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The convict attempted to defraud one Mr. Sani Musa between the months of March, 2017, June and July, 2018 at Sokoto by falsely representing himself as man capable of making Sani wealthy through his prayers. The convict obtained a total sum of N668,000.00 (Six Hundred and Sixty Eight Thousand Naira) from his victim.
The Prosecution counsel, Habila Jonathan, in the course of the trial tendered several documents and called six witnesses to prove the case against the convict.
For committing an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 2006, punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act, he was convicted by Justice Bello Duwale and also ordered to restitute the obtained amount to the victim through the EFCC.
