Electoral Act Bill: Like Senate, Reps Makes U-Turn, Adopts Direct, Indirect Primaries

The House of Representatives has agreed to follow the Senate’s consensus-selection method for political party election candidates.

This was disclosed on Tuesday following a motion titled, Rescission Clause 84 of the Electoral Act No.62010( Amendment) Bill, 2022 and Committal to the Committee of the Whole as sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, All Progressives Congress, APC, Kebbi North.

Recall that The News Beam had reported that the National Assembly, had earlier passed the bill, emphasizing that political parties use only a direct mode of primary elections but President Buhari rejected this when it was submitted for assent.

It should also be recalled that The News Beam reported that the Senators reintroduced and passed bill after including the indirect mode of conducting primaries. Indicating that the direct, indirect and consensus for the selection of candidates by parties.

The House of Representatives, however, adopted only the Direct or Indirect, neglecting the Consensus method.
