With the recent increment in electricity tarrif, Nigerians have been burdened to pay more than double of their former bill.

This event has affected both the poor and the rich, as alot of people have aired their dissatisfaction with the current increase in electricity bill.

Confirming the hit on the rich, Toke Makinwa, a Nigerian radio personality, television host, vlogger, lifestyle entrepreneur and author, made a complaint on her Twitter page, saying she currently pays N120,000/month for electricity bill.

“It presently costs me 120k a month to keep the lights on in my house and I hear they want to increase electricity tariff again, what is going on Nigeria?? I remember when my light bill was 50k a month, this country will kill you before your time” she said.

Recall that, Electricity distribution companies started the year with a further increase in electricity tariffs. This followed a new order issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC instructing DisCos to increase tariffs effective January 1, 2021.

The increase in tariffs follows a suspension of an earlier order issued in August increasing tariffs starting September 1, 2020. However, a threat by Labour to go on a nationwide strike forced the government to suspend the tariffs for two weeks ending October 15th, 2020.

The Federal Government and the organized Labour then agreed to provide a tariff relief of N10.20 per kilowatt-hour for Nigerians for the next 3 months and also distribute 6 million free meters following the completion of the 2 weeks suspension of electricity tariff.
