The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the President Mohammadu Buhari to immediately enforce the court order which directed immediate abolition of life pensions and double salaries being enjoyed by former Governors who now serve in the Senate.
This was contained in a statement publicised via the organisation’s Twitter handle @SERAPNigeria. The statement reads:
BREAKING: Following request by
@NigeriaGov @MalamiSan asking us to “send the full list of ex-governors & ministers that have collected life pension, in line with the judgment”, we call on @MBuhari to enforce the court order by promptly stopping life pension to ex-govs & ministers…
The group stated that Immediate compliance to the order will send a note to Nigerians that the present administration respects the law.
SERAP has been agitating for the stop of life pension to former governor’s and minister, noting the fact that many of the political office holders keeps rotating their political office yet getting pension for the previous office they held and salaries for their present office, hence, resulting in double payment.
According to The Sun, Justice Oguntoyinbo had in 2018 ruled that:
“… the Attorney General is hereby directed to urgently institute appropriate legal actions to challenge the legality of states’ laws permitting former governors, who are now senators and ministers to enjoy governors’ emoluments while drawing normal salaries and allowances in their new political offices and to identify those involved and seek full recovery of public funds from the former governors.”
