– NAFDAC discovers company producing falsified Ciprofloxacin
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has notified the public of the production of fake Ciprofloxacin Tablets BP (500mg) by an Indian company named Mars Remedies PVT Limited.
Ciprofloxacin belongs to a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It is used to treat serious infections, or infections when other anitbiotics have not worked. It’s used to treat bacterial infections, such as: chest infections (including pneumonia), skin and bone infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), conjunctivitis eye infections, typhoid fever (a serious infection that is common in developing countries), infectious diarrhea (infections that cause severe diarrhea), ear infections, and prostate (male reproductive gland). Ciprofloxacin can also be used to help stop people getting meningitis if they have been really close to someone with the infection.
The side effects of Ciprofloxacin may include: increase in the risk of tendinitis, tendon rupture, and peripheral neuropathy in people of all ages. Serious side effects, such as: nerve pain (with a sensation of pins and needles), chronic pain, burning, numbness, or weakness in the joints and muscles.
The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye has explained that the recent changes made in the production of the drug by Mars Remedies PVT Limited was not approved by the Agency, because the variation in the formulation of the Ciprofloxacin 500mg tablets used by Mars may have impact on the product quality and shelf –life.
In violation of NAFDAC extant laws and regulations, the company illegally manufactured different formulations of Ciprofloxacin tablets instead of the approved formulation for export to Nigeria.
Mars Remedies PVT Limited, who is the manufacturer for Pinnacle Health Pharmaceutical Ltd, 16/18. Nuru Oniwo Street, Surulere, Lagos has hereby been blacklisted by NAFDAC for the production of falsified Ciprofloxacin Tablets BP (500mg) with NAFDAC REG. NO C4-0498.
In view of the unprofessional practice, the Agency states that all products manufactured by the Mars Remedies PVT LTD, 635, GIDC Estate Waghodia, Vadodara, Gujurat, India, will not be allowed into Nigeria with immediate effect.
The Public is hereby advised to avoid the use of drugs produced by this company.
Prof. Adeyeye also reiterated the Agency’s position of zero tolerance for substandard and falsified medicines preponderance in Nigeria in fulfillment of the regulatory obligation of safeguarding the health of the nation.
