A lawyer and an human rights activist, Inibehe Effiong has confirmed the attack on Yele Sowore by a female police officer today, 31st May, 2021 during an attempted protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
Disclosing this on his Twitter page he said:
“@YeleSowore has just been shot by a female police officer at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
“@ayomide_ar@YeleSowore has just been shot by a female police officer at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
“The criminal officer is said to be an ACP. I watched Sowore being shot live on Facebook.
“This is what Nigeria has been turned into under Buhari. They’ve declared war on the Civic Space.
“They fenced the Unity Fountain with iron and cables to prevent protests.
“It is not yet clear whether the officer fired a gun or a teargas cannister. What is clear is that Sowore was directly targeted.” He stated.
Omoyele “Yele” Sowore is a Nigerian human rights activist, pro-democracy campaigner, former presidential candidate, and founder of an online news agency Sahara Reporters.
On 3rd August 2019, Sowore was arrested by the Nigerian State Security Service for alleged treason after calling for a protest tagged #RevolutionNow. He was arrested again and beaten during a protest in Abuja on January 1, 2021.
