NBC had earlier sued the television stations for “unprofessional coverage”
Anti-corruption advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has threatened to file a lawsuit against the National Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, for imposing fines of N3m each on Channels TV, Arise TV, and Africa Independent Television.
SERAP made its reaction known in a statement thought the group’s official twitter account.
NBC had today, sanctioned the television stations for the use of unverifiable online video footages on the social media during their coverage on the #EndSARS protests.
Condemning the “illegal fines”, SERAP claims such actions likened to “Nigerian authorities’ push to silence independent media and voices”. Therefore, the group has called on regulatory body to drop the “unconstitutional fines” within 48 hours.
“The fines are detrimental to freedom of expression and the media, and access to information in Nigeria, and the NBC must withdraw the decision. Media freedom and media plurality are a central part of the effective exercise of freedom of expression and access to information”, the statement read in part.
