The President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, has been assassinated by a group of gunmen that invaded his private residence in Port-au-Prince in the early hours of Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
Haiti is a Caribbean country in the North America continent that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east.
With Haiti politically divided, and facing a growing humanitarian crisis and shortages of food, there are fears of widespread disorder.
However, the acting Haitian Prime Minister, Claude Joseph, described the attack as ‘odious, inhumane, and barbaric’, appealing for calm, noting that security agencies have taken control of the situation.
The nation’s First Lady, Martine, was also shot by the attackers and is receiving medical treatment.
