The students of Kwara State University, KWASU, have taken to the front of the university gate in Malete, Kwara State to protest over the Increase in hostel exemption fee from N5,000 to N20,000, amidst other issues.
According to one of our sources, The school which has a law that forces 100 level students and final level students to stay in the school hostel for a fee of atleast N50,000, have been seen as torture by the students, alternate to the comfort the school envisioned to provide, as students complain of bad beds, lack of light, lack of water, etc.
These complaints are some of the reasons highlighted by some of the students for refusing to stay in the hostel.
In respect of this, the school provided an alternative, stating that the student who refuse to stay in the school hostel is expected to pay an exemption fee of N5,000.
However, the school decided to raise the exemption fee from N5,000 to N20,000, in the first semester of 2020/2021 session, as it complained that over 300 bed spaces are available as most of the expected students in the hostel declined paying for the school hostel.
This and other underlying issues have triggered the students to protesting, as they highlighted other issues they want the school to attend to.
