The National Universities Commission (NUC) has revealed that only 25 universities in Nigeria have their courses fully accredited.
Nigeria currently boasts of 170 public and private universities, however, the commission focused on 113 of them.
According to the commission’s 2021 Nigeria University system rankings, less than 70 per cent of courses offered by the remaining 88 varsities are accredited.

The institutions that have their courses 100 percent accredited are; Adeleke University, Osun State; Al-Qalam University, Katsina State; Caleb University, Lagos State; Chrisland University, Lagos State; Crescent University, Ogun State; Federal University, Lokoja, Federal University, Wukari, Federal University, Kashere.
Hallmark University, Ogun State; Hezekiah University, Imo State; Ibrahim Babangida University, Niger State; Igbenedion University, Edo State; Kano University of Science and Technology, Kano; Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Kogi State University and Maitama Sule University, Kano State also made the list.
The remaining universities are McPherson University, Ogun State; Mountain Top University, Ogun State; Niger Delta University, Delta State; Nigeria Defence Academy; PAMO University of Medical Science, River State; Rivers State University; Samuel Adegboyega University, Edo State; Summit University, Kwara State; Umaru Musa Yar’Ardua University, Katsina State.
It is important to note that ten of Nigeria’s most preferred university by admission seekers in the country were left out of NUC rankings.
2021 policy document released by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board had revealed the ten of top choice Universities in Nigeria.
Of the total 2,110,815 students (including 171,660 direct entry (DE) students) that applied for admission, the following institutions had the most number of aspirants.
1. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) – 78,466;
2. University of Lagos (UNILAG) – 59,190;
3. University of Benin (UNIBEN)- 49,763;
4. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) – 47,239;
5. Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) – 45,920;
6. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) – 44,509;
7. Bayero University Kano (BUK) – 44,352;
8. Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) – 43542;
9. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) – 42, 614;
10. University of Jos (UNIJOS) – 38,309.
Thus, all of the top ten most preferred Universities are not fully accredited, according to data by NUC.
