The Federal Government will award the Nigerian national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, a cash prize of N25 million for winning the 2020 Afrobasketball Championships in Cameroon.

D’Tigress of Nigeria defeated Mali in the final of the Afrobasketball Women’s Championships in Cameroon last year to win the Afrobasketball women’s title for the third time in a row.

Following the victory, Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports Development, recommended that a token of appreciation be given to the African queens of the courts for doing the nation proud.

This request has now been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

D’Tigress has become a global force in addition to its dominance on the continent. They qualified as Africa’s sole representatives to the FIBA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Sydney, Australia, in September 2022.

Having lost their first game to China, the Nigerian queens D’Tigress defeated France and their bitter African rivals Mali to secure their place in the World Cup finals.
