The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the appointment of five new Members of Lagos State Judicial Service Commission.
According to a statement signed by the Governor and made available on the official Twitter account of the Lagos State Government, the Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, explained that the Governor’s approval of the new appointments, is in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, which was consequent upon the expiration of the tenure of the former members.
Furthermore, the statement noted that the new members of the commission were appointed based on their qualification and depth of experience.
Constitutionally, the State Chief Judge serves as Chairman of the Judicial Service Commission.
The new members are:
1. Honourable Justice Kazeem O. Alogba
2. Mr. Moyosore Jubril Onigbanjo SAN
3. Mr. Supo Ati-John
4. Mrs. Bamidele Akinyemi
5. Mr. Seinde Kareem
Sanwo-Olu also thanked the outgoing members for their selfless service to Lagos State.
The Lagos State Judicial Service Commission was inaugurated as Judicial Service Committee in 1980 by the first Executive Governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef KayodeJakande with Hon. Justice AdetunjiAdefarasin who was then the Chief Judge of Lagos State as its first Chairman.
It was however reconstituted and changed to Judicial Service Commission in May 1999 during the tenure of Hon. Justice S.O. Adagun as the State Chief Judge and its Chairman respectively. The change from Committee to Commission was in line with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
Judicial Service Commission is a statutory body responsible for among other things, the appointment, promotion and disciplinary control of Judicial and non-Judicial Staff of the Lagos State Judiciary.
The Chairman of the Commission is the Honourable Chief Judge. Other members are the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and four other members including Secretary to the Commission who are duly appointed by the Governor of the State.
