Karim Benzema of Real Madrid and France has been found guilty of conspiring to blackmail a fellow French footballer, Mathieu Valbuena with a sex tape.
A judge of the Versailles Court sentenced Benzema to a one-year suspended jail term. The Real Madrid star also bagged a €75,000 fine for his involvement.
A suspended prison sentence is one imposed by the court and then delayed. An individual’s sentence may be delayed for a period of probation, treatment for addiction, or other conditions to be met. They will likely be sent to prison if they violate the suspended sentence or commit another crime. The judge typically dismisses the case without placing the defendant in custody if the defendant complies with all the probationary terms.
The sex tape scandal, which started around 2015, saw Karim banned from playing for the French national team for many years.
