The Federal Government has indefinitely suspended the activities of Twitter in Nigeria on the basis of the platform’s “persistent use for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”
Above is the reason cited by the Nigerian government to suspend the activities of the micro-blogging platform. However, the platform has served virtually all the parastatals of Government in the country.
Funny as it may, the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture’s page on Twitter was used for the dissemination of this news.
Other Reasons not Mentioned
No doubt, the indefinite suspension of Twitter by FG cannot be unconnected to Tuesday’s incident. In what seem like a disrespect, Twitter deleted a tweet by President Muhammad Buhari for flouting its policies. An action which was immediately trailed by a condemnation statement by the Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.
Also, the minister’s call for the social media regulation is another untold reason open to many Nigerians for the ban of Twitter in Nigeria.
For whatever reasons FG gave to justify its action, it is also not far from the fact that it is a move to silence the voice of the people.
